Key takeaways

  • Most Nomad eSIMs are data-only: no traditional calls, SMS or local number.
  • WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal and other app calls work normally over the data connection.
  • Keep your home SIM active (data off) to still receive bank codes and normal calls on your usual number.
  • Certain Thailand DTAC plans are the exception — they can include a local number and calls.
  • Move critical accounts to authenticator apps before travel in case SMS codes are unreliable abroad.

Data-only is not the same as disconnected

A data eSIM still handles most travel communication:

  • WhatsApp and Signal messages/calls
  • iMessage and FaceTime where available
  • Hotel, airline and ride-hailing apps
  • Email, maps, translation and online check-in

Your WhatsApp account normally stays tied to your usual number; it does not need a new local number merely because Nomad supplies the data connection.

Keep your home number safely

Set Nomad as the mobile-data line. Leave your home SIM on for calls/texts only if you need bank codes or normal incoming messages. Disable automatic data switching and home-line roaming data so the phone cannot use your old SIM for internet by accident. Full setup steps are in How to Use Nomad eSIM.

If you turn the primary SIM off entirely, Nomad notes you will not receive calls or SMS verification codes on that number. Before travel, move key accounts to an authenticator app and save recovery codes offline.

What works over a data-only eSIM

This table shows what a data-only Nomad plan handles by itself, and what still needs your home SIM or a specific plan.

Communication needWorks on Nomad data-only?Practical route
WhatsApp / Signal messages & callsYesWorks over data; keeps your existing number
iMessage / FaceTimeYesWorks over data where the service is available
Traditional voice callsNo (most plans)Use app calls, or keep the home SIM line active

The Thailand exception

Nomad says most plans are data-only, but certain Thailand DTAC eSIMs include a phone number, unlimited local DTAC calls and limited international calling. Treat that as a plan-specific inclusion, not a reason to assume every Nomad eSIM includes a number.

FAQ

Can I receive SMS with Nomad?

Nomad itself is mainly data-led. You may receive SMS on your home SIM if you keep that line active, subject to your home provider's terms.

Can I make normal calls with Nomad?

Most Nomad plans do not support traditional calls. Use app calls over data or choose an exact plan that explicitly includes voice.

Will WhatsApp work?

Yes, WhatsApp works over mobile data or Wi-Fi. Your existing account can keep its usual number.

Bottom line

Nomad is excellent for data communication, not usually for a new local number. Keep your home line only for what you need and stop it from becoming your accidental data plan.
